Choosing the Right Pool Tile
Pool tile does more than decorate a swimming pool. It helps define the waterline, creates visual depth and provides a durable finished surface when the correct material and installation system are selected.
At BELK Tile, you can explore pool tile in glass, porcelain, recycled glass and mosaic designs. Some products are intended for decorative waterlines, while others may be approved for permanent underwater use. The important distinction is that pool suitability must be confirmed for each specific product rather than assumed from its material or appearance.
Whether you prefer a classic blue waterline, a shimmering glass mosaic or a decorative sea turtle design, the best starting point is identifying exactly where the tile will be installed.

Types of Swimming Pool Tile
Glass Pool Tile
Glass mosaic tile is a popular choice for swimming pools because of its color, light reflection and wide range of decorative possibilities.
Blue and aqua glass mosaics can reinforce the natural appearance of pool water, while white, green and multicolor combinations create different effects. Iridescent finishes are especially interesting because their appearance changes as sunlight and viewing angles shift.
For submerged applications, choose glass tile specifically approved by the manufacturer for continuous immersion. Confirm that the tile's mounting system and the specified installation materials are suitable for the pool environment.

Porcelain Pool Tile
Porcelain is another strong option for swimming pool applications when the selected product is properly rated.
Its low water absorption and availability in numerous colors, textures and formats make it useful for projects ranging from traditional waterlines to contemporary pool interiors.
Porcelain can provide a more understated appearance than highly reflective glass. It is also worth considering when you want a coordinated design between the pool interior and surrounding areas, although the deck and pool interior may require different surface specifications.
Browse Porcelain Tile and confirm individual pool-use ratings before selecting a product.
Recycled Glass Pool Mosaics
Recycled glass mosaics provide another way to introduce color and visual interest into pool designs.
Depending on the product, these mosaics can offer soft translucent-looking color, distinctive surface character or a more contemporary appearance. Their small format can be useful for decorative patterns and curved surfaces.
Not every recycled glass tile is approved for submerged installations. Check the manufacturer's pool-use and mounting specifications before ordering.

Mosaic Pool Tile
Mosaics are particularly useful when a pool design includes curves, steps, benches, waterline details or decorative accents.
Small individual pieces can follow some curved surfaces more easily than larger field tile. However, sheet mounting, joint spacing and installation requirements must be appropriate for the project.
Popular mosaic looks include hexagons, penny rounds, squares and decorative patterns. For pool floors, steps and other walking surfaces, the individual product must also meet the applicable slip-resistance and installation requirements.

Pool Waterline Tile
The waterline is one of the most visible parts of a swimming pool. It creates a finished transition between the pool surface and the water while providing a cleanable tile surface where oils, minerals and other deposits may accumulate.
Blue glass and porcelain mosaics remain familiar choices, but the waterline can also be used to introduce green, white, gray or multicolor designs.
A waterline band can coordinate with the pool interior or provide deliberate contrast. For example, a deep blue mosaic against a lighter pool finish creates a defined border, while a lighter glass mosaic can produce a softer transition.
Remember that waterline tile experiences repeated wetting, drying, chemical exposure and, in some climates, freezing conditions. Choose a product rated for those conditions rather than assuming every backsplash mosaic is suitable.
Fully Tiled Swimming Pools
A fully tiled pool creates a different appearance from a pool with only a tiled waterline.
Instead of concentrating color around the upper edge, the tile becomes the finished surface across the walls and floor. Glass mosaics can create a reflective, color-rich interior, while approved porcelain tile may provide a quieter, more architectural appearance.
Full-pool installations require special attention to the substrate, waterproofing, movement accommodation, setting materials and grout. The tile must be approved for continuous immersion, and all components of the installation system must be compatible.
The pool floor, steps and benches also require separate consideration because wet barefoot traffic introduces safety requirements that do not apply to a decorative vertical wall.
Decorative Pool Mosaics
Decorative pool mosaics can turn a swimming pool into a more personalized space.
Rather than relying entirely on a repeating field tile, you can introduce an underwater image or decorative feature that becomes visible through the water. These designs are especially effective when their scale and placement are considered during the original pool layout.
At BELK Tile, decorative themes include dolphins, sea turtles and other aquatic designs. Review each mosaic's dimensions, material and approved application before incorporating it into the pool finish.

Dolphin Pool Mosaics
Dolphin mosaics introduce movement and an unmistakable ocean-inspired theme.
A single dolphin design can become a focal point, while multiple coordinated designs can create a more elaborate underwater scene. Placement matters because the finished image should be visible from the areas where people most often view the pool.
For a cleaner design, consider allowing the dolphin mosaic to stand out against a relatively simple surrounding pool finish.

Turtle Pool Mosaics
Sea turtle mosaics are a natural fit for tropical, coastal and nature-inspired swimming pools.
Their recognizable shapes work well as individual decorative features or as part of a larger underwater composition. They can also complement blue and green field tile without requiring the entire pool to use a complex pattern.
Choose the mosaic size according to the pool dimensions and intended viewing distance.

Popular Pool Tile Colors
Blue Pool Tile
Blue remains a classic swimming pool color because it coordinates naturally with water and outdoor surroundings.
Light aqua can create a bright coastal direction, while medium and deep blues can give the pool a more saturated appearance. Iridescent blue mosaics introduce additional visual movement as sunlight changes throughout the day.
The final perceived water color also depends on water depth, lighting, surrounding materials and the pool's other interior finishes.
Green and Aqua Pool Tile
Green, turquoise and aqua tile can introduce a lagoon-inspired or tropical character.
These colors often work well with landscaping, natural stone and outdoor living areas. They can also be useful when you want something different from a traditional dark blue waterline.
White and Neutral Pool Tile
White, gray and neutral mosaics create a quieter pool design.
These colors can complement contemporary architecture, light stone coping and minimalist outdoor spaces. Subtle texture or iridescence can provide interest without relying on strong color contrast.
Iridescent Pool Tile
Iridescent mosaics are chosen primarily for the way they interact with light.
Their appearance can shift with viewing angle, sunlight and water movement, creating a more dynamic surface than a uniform solid-color tile.
Explore Iridescent Glass Tiles, checking pool approval for the exact product selected.
Glass vs. Porcelain Pool Tile
Both glass and porcelain can perform well in swimming pools when the products and installation systems are specifically approved.
Glass is often selected for color intensity, translucency or iridescent effects. It can be particularly attractive for decorative waterlines and mosaic-covered pool interiors.
Porcelain offers a different visual direction, including solid colors, stone-inspired looks and less reflective finishes. It may be the better choice when you want a restrained appearance or a particular surface texture.
Neither material should be considered universally superior. The right choice depends on the specific product's approval, installation conditions, design goals and budget.
Pool Tile for Saltwater Swimming Pools
Saltwater pools use a chlorine-generating system, so they still expose tile and installation materials to chlorine and pool-water chemistry.
The suitability of a tile depends on more than whether it is glass or porcelain. Confirm compatibility with the pool's water treatment, expected chemical exposure, cleaning methods and installation system.
Grout, adhesives, exposed metal components and other materials also need to be appropriate for the environment.
Maintaining balanced pool-water chemistry is important for the long-term appearance of the installation.
Pool Tile for Cold Climates
Swimming pools in areas with freezing temperatures require additional consideration.
Tile exposed to freeze-thaw conditions must be specifically rated for that environment. Waterline areas are especially important because they may experience changing water levels and repeated exposure to moisture and freezing temperatures.
The tile's water absorption, installation system, substrate and winterization practices all contribute to performance.
Do not assume that a product approved for an indoor pool is automatically suitable for an outdoor pool in a cold climate.
Pool Tile for Spas and Hot Tubs
Spas can place additional demands on tile because of elevated water temperatures, water chemistry and repeated heating cycles.
Small mosaics are often visually appealing on spa walls and curved surfaces, but the tile and complete installation system must be approved for the specific spa conditions.
If a spa is integrated with a swimming pool, coordinating the tile can help create a consistent design while allowing different decorative treatments for each area.
Pool Interior Tile vs. Pool Deck Tile
Pool interior tile and pool deck tile serve different purposes.
Interior tile must be compatible with pool water, chemical treatment and, where applicable, permanent submersion. Pool deck tile must also provide appropriate slip resistance for wet, barefoot pedestrian traffic.
A glossy glass mosaic that looks beautiful on a vertical pool wall should not automatically be installed on the surrounding deck.
Pool steps, benches and other walking or standing surfaces inside the pool also need appropriate product selection. Always verify the requirements for the exact location.
Choosing the Right Pool Tile Size and Shape
Small mosaics are common in swimming pools because they offer decorative flexibility and can accommodate some curved surfaces.
Square mosaics create a traditional appearance. Hexagons and penny rounds introduce more visible pattern, while elongated mosaics can create a linear design.
Larger tile formats may also be suitable when specifically approved, but their installation requirements can differ.
Consider the pool's dimensions, curves, steps and waterline height before choosing a format. The best design is one that looks intentional across the complete pool rather than attractive only in a small sample.
Pool Tile Installation Considerations
Pool tile installation is different from installing a typical kitchen backsplash.
A swimming pool is a continuously wet environment, and the assembly may be exposed to water pressure, chemical treatment, thermal movement and changing outdoor conditions.
Use a pool-appropriate installation system specified for the selected tile and substrate. This includes suitable waterproofing where required, setting materials, grout, movement joints and curing procedures.
Confirm whether the mosaic's mounting method is approved for submerged use. Some backing and adhesive systems are not suitable for permanent immersion.
Follow the tile and installation-material manufacturers' instructions, and use a qualified pool tile installer for complex or fully submerged projects.
How to Clean Pool Waterline Tile
Regular maintenance helps prevent mineral deposits, body oils and other residue from accumulating along the waterline.
Use cleaning methods compatible with the tile, grout and finish. A cleaner that is appropriate for one porcelain product may be too aggressive for another material or decorative surface.
Avoid abrasive tools or harsh chemical treatments unless the manufacturer specifically approves them.
Keeping pool-water chemistry balanced and addressing buildup early can reduce the need for aggressive cleaning later.
How Much Pool Tile Do You Need?
For a waterline installation, measure the total perimeter of the pool and multiply it by the planned tile-band height.
For example, a pool with a 100-foot perimeter and a 6-inch-high waterline band requires approximately 50 square feet of tile before accounting for waste, cuts and layout adjustments.
Fully tiled pools require separate measurements for walls, floors, steps, benches and other surfaces.
Allow for additional material based on the tile format, pattern, curves and project complexity. Your installer can help establish an appropriate waste allowance.
Order Pool Tile Samples Before Making Your Final Selection
Pool tile can look very different in person than it does in a product photograph.
Glass, iridescent finishes and textured mosaics respond to lighting and viewing angles, while the surrounding pool finish influences how colors appear underwater.
Compare samples in outdoor light when possible. Review them against the coping, deck materials and other finishes before placing a full order.
For decorative pool mosaics, confirm the design dimensions and planned location as well as the material and application requirements.
